Prior to the conduct of a GPS survey:

During the initial set-up of the instrumentation, it is necessary to record significant information. Some of the information is needed to initiate the Receiver during the start up phase, and some will be needed for post processing... in any event, failure to collect it may mean recollection of your data from scratch.

This is something you want to avoid because:

• The survey gear might not be available later,
• There is considerable effort in performing a resurvey,
• Your survey data might be temporal in nature and impossible to re-collect,
• The financial costs of re-collection may be high.
