You should have worked through the instructions in the How to process in Excel hyperlink before attempting this section.

In this section, using ArcView 3.2, you will

Import the Grid point AND sample value .dbf tables.
Create a shapefile from the grid points.
Create a polygon theme into which you will generate the cells.
Attach your sample data to these cells.

Open ArcView.
Open a new project.

You will already have two dbf files
1. The Spatial data for the grid
2. The Attribute data- your values.
These will have to be added to the ArcView project as Tables.
In the project menu click the Tables icon.
- The Add button will be acivated.
- Click the Add button.
- Navigate to your grid file and select it.
  The dbf table should appear on the screen.
In the same way dbf file containing your sample values.

The next step is to load the grid point data as spatial data in the View.
This is called creating a Point Events.
In the project window click the View icon and then click the New button to create a new view.
- From the menu View>Add Event Theme.
- Under Tables you will select your grid point file.
- For the X and Y field entries select the appropriate data fields.
The Theme will be loaded into the view. Highlight the theme and Tick the legend to make the theme the active theme and display the data in the view.You should also save the theme as a shapefile, you may need it later and not wish to re-create the point events.
- From the menu Theme>Convert to Shapefile.
- Give the shapefile a meaningful name and save it to your working directory.
- You can add it to your view.
You can inspect the grid point labels if you wish.
- From the menu Theme>Auto Label. In the placard that appears you will be able to select the label field.
- menu Theme>Remove Labels will clear the labels from the view.
Your attribute data is related to areal units, the Cells/Quadrats, and not to points.
Therefore you will need to generate the cells from the grid points. This will involve heads-up digitising.
First you will need to create a polygon theme.
- From the menu View>New Theme. Select Polygon from the drop down list and OK.
- Save the shapefile to your working directory and give it a meaningful name.
Your new polygon theme will appear in the view. Highlight it in the Legend to make it the active Theme.
It should already be in edit mode.
The next step is to digitise your cells.
- The edit tools are located on the bottom row of icons.
- If your grid is a north-south type select the rectangle tool.
- If your grid is oblique you will need the irregular polygon tool.
- Use the grid points as a trace underlay and digitise your polygons.
- Make use of the zoom and pan tools to assist your accuracy.
- Digitise the polygons in order- this will make it easier to assign cell ids.
- Once you have digitised your cells you should save your edits.
Open the table and inspect it.
The ID field values are all '0'. You will need to insert the correct cell ids.
If you digitised the cells in order they should increment.
- Insert the correct IDs into the table. Once done save your edits.
- You can inspect your IDs in the view by using the Auto Label function.
Next you will need to join your value data.
- Open the sample value table if it is not already open.
- In the grey header area where the field names are located click the join field, which should be Sample_id. The field name will show as a darker grey, which indicates that it is selected.
- Activate the View and open the table for your cells. Make sure the theme is editable. Click the Id field label. It should turn darker grey.
- These two fields will enable the join.
- An icon showing two pages joined with an arrow will appear active at the top of the display.
- Click it to conduct the join.
  
  The attribute values are now attached.
- You should now stop and save your edits.

Congratulations- you have now acheived you goal. You have sampled your data in the Virtual environment and got it into your GIS.
