There
are several different types of survey level, though all perform
broadly the same task; to define a horizontal line of sight using
a telescope . The difference between the types is a factor of cost
and accuracy. The Dumpy level is one of the cheapest levels on the
market used extensively by builders in the building industry. The
most common type of levelling instrument used by Surveyors is the
Automatic Level. The most accurate levels on the market today are
the digital levels, capable of measuring to a 100th of a mm.. Some
features of a level generic to all types of levels:-.
All levels have some method of establishing a line of sight that
is perpendicular to the vertical axis.
