Levelling
requires the use of a optical survey level and a number of other
pieces of equipment. It is necessary to assemble all of the equipment
together and check that it is in good order prior to conducting
a level survey . It is pointless to attempt to conduct a level survey
if any item is missing, or if a vital item is not in correct adjustment.
The
basic items required for Levelling are:-
- The
level - the instrument used to define a horizontal line of sight.
- Survey
tripod - used to support the level.
- Survey
staff - a graduated staff used to determine vertical heights.
- Change
Plate - a small flat metal plate with a raised point in the centre
that is used to support the staff on the ground. The plate is
firmly embedded into the ground to stop the staff from subsiding.

- Staff
bubble - a small bulls eye bubble that is held to the side of
the staff to ensure it is held vertical.
- Level
booking Sheet or Level field book
