PERSONAL DATA

I am a Senior Lecturer in Mechatronics at Curtin University of Technology. I have a degree in Mechanical Engineering (1981) and a PhD (1990) in Manufacturing from Loughborough University of Technology, UK. Recent Publications

Previous work experience includes 2 years as Control Systems engineer for Rolls-Royce Aero. Following this I was a PhD research student at Loughborough University under the supervision of Prof. Richard H. Weston, Department. of Manufacturing Engineering. The research was on the design and implementation of a model-based control scheme for modular robots.

From 1988-95 I was lecturer in Department of Electronic Engineering at University of Hull, UK. During this period I was Course Director responsible for designing, with advice from leading manufacturing industries, one of the first UK Mechatronics undergraduate programmes.

TEACHING INTERESTS My teaching is largely concerned with mechatronics and the adoption of student-centred project based teaching methods. I currently coordinate and teach the mechatronic project units on the 4 year Mechatronics undergraduate degree at CUT.

My principal teaching experience relates to teaching B.Eng & MSc courses in Manufacturing Systems and CAD, Mechatronics Project courses, Mechatronic Machine Control, Object-Oriented methods.

RESEARCH INTERESTS
  • My research interests are in the areas of Modular Machine Design, and progressing a radically new Modular Manufacturing business paradigm for 21st century manufacturing.
  • Modular Automation Research Group
  • PERSONAL INTERESTS
I currently participate in a range of sports, including tennis and aerobics. However my favourite pastime is wind surfing - so it is best not to try and contact me when the wind is blowing! - which should be pretty frequent since Perth is the third windiest city in the world and is number one in my books since it is also hot virtually all year round. I also (occasionally) attempt to play the piano and speak German.
