Summary
In 1999, a consortium of five Australian universities purchased ten geodetic-quality
Leica CORS-1000 dual-frequency GPS receivers and peripherals. These are essential
for new and existing GPS-geodetic research programs, which involve collaboration
between investigators at these universities. The projects to be supported include the
monitoring of deformation of man-made structures and natural features, global and
regional plate tectonics, measurement of sea-level change, precise mapping of
Antarctic ice sheets and their flow, and sounding of the Earth's atmosphere.
Four of these receivers are to be deployed in the south-west seismic zone of
Western Australia to attempt to resolve any surface motion associated with the
earthquake activity.
