THE WEST AUSTRALIAN HIGH PRECISION GPS NETWORK

 

The densification of GPS control networks thoughout the Australian continent has been ongoing since the establishment of the Australian Fiducial Network (AFN). The AFN forms the fundamental framework for the Geocentric Datum of Australia (GDA) and was coordinated during the 1992 IGS campaign. It consists of eight geologically stable marks at sites across Australia.. The AFN was densified into the Australian National Network (ANN) in 1993 (with some additional observations in 1992 and 1994). The ANN consists of seventy eight stations at approximately 500 km intervals across Australia. It has an estimated accuracy of 5cm at 95% confidence.

The STATEFIX project, commissioned and managed by the West Australian Department of Land Administration, represents the densification of the Australian National Network in West Australia to approximately 200km. Some 198 dual frequency baselines (mean baseline length 202km) were observed between March and November 1996. Data processing and multi-baseline network adjustment were undertaken at Curtin University of Technology using an in-house data processing package SWAG (South West Australian GPS Software).  Baseline lengths range from as short as 45km to distances of longer than 450km. Baselines of less than 250km in length were observed for a minimum of 12 hours, baselines longer than 250km in length were observed for a minimum of 16 hours. The observation interval was 30 seconds for all baselines.
